Very pleasant day’s driving today after checking out the Fine Arts Museum in Salt Lake City first thing this morning, to find it closed Mondays!!!
Drove downtown and around Temple Square. This town and State have a very strong LDS presence. The Mormon Church of Latter Day Saints following the teaching of one Joseph Smith dominate this State and LDS people own most of the farmland and also most of the business in this State.
We had a four hour drive up to our chosen destination, Jackson, close enough to Yellowstone but very expensive beds but we are very pleased to get a bed anywhere near Yellowstone . Next weekend is July 4 Independence Day and it seems everybody is travelling in every type of camper , caravan and fifth wheeler to a holiday destination for next weekend.
I always thought this part of the country would be desert like, dry, like around Las Vegas but it reminds me of the Western district but bigger mountains . The rainfall, I think is pretty low but the amount of underground water put through Pivot irrigators is staggering and even the dry country must have had a good spring because all the cattle are fat and up to their bellies in grass. As you drive around and through one gorge you come out on another beautiful valley – high mountains surround a valley which is green and lush – pivot irrigators spraying water onto Lucerne or crops. These valleys of Wyoming once had herds of bisons roaming freely.
The roads are excellent and traffic flows fast even around the cities and the limits are up to 80 mph and most do more than that so it does not take long to get anywhere.
